The legend behind this song

They Silenced the Language. They Could Not Silence the Goddess.

"The Forty Shillings Silence" is the fifth chapter of "The Eternal Vigil" — the epic Celtic saga continuing from "The Cycle of Crows." After witnessing Viking raids, Norman conquest, and the curse of Strongbow, The Morrígan now watches something far more insidious: the systematic destruction of Irish identity itself. Under Elizabethan rule, speaking the Irish language carried a forty shilling fine — an act of cultural erasure designed to silence a people without drawing a blade. This is her most mournful vigil yet.

This is not a battle. It is a funeral for a language.

Each chapter deepens the wound. This one cuts to the soul.

Historical Context: Under Elizabethan conquest, the Statutes of Kilkenny and later laws criminalized the Irish language — a forty shilling fine for those caught speaking it. The Filí, Ireland's ancient class of poet-seers, were specifically targeted as dangerous keepers of cultural memory. Destroying the language was not merely administrative. It was an attempt to erase a people's soul. The Morrígan, who has watched a thousand battles, understands: this is the cruelest war.

What hits harder — the sword or the silence? The saga continues...
