The legend behind this song
The Morrígan's Vengeful Prophecy
"Strongbow's Bane" is the fourth chapter of "The Eternal Vigil," the epic sequel to "The Cycle of Crows." This aggressive symphonic Celtic metal anthem chronicles The Morrígan's curse upon Richard de Clare - "Strongbow" - the Norman warlord who invaded Ireland in 1170. Unlike previous tracks where she observes from a distance, here The Morrígan actively intervenes, marking the conqueror for doom from the moment he sets foot on Irish soil.
This is vengeance made manifest. A prophecy spoken. A curse fulfilled.
This is the first time in the saga that The Morrígan moves from observer to active participant - personally cursing an invader who dares claim her land.
Musical Elements: Aggressive symphonic power metal at 118 BPM with dark curse atmosphere. Features heavy distorted guitars, rapid double-kick drumming, orchestral string sections, and cinematic brass, all blended with traditional Celtic instrumentation including bodhrán war drums, uilleann pipes, and Celtic fiddle. Powerful theatrical female vocals deliver a vengeful prophecy with dynamic range from ominous verses to soaring operatic chorus declarations.
Historical Context: Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke - known as "Strongbow" - led the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1170. He married Irish princess Aoife to legitimize his claim and became a symbol of foreign conquest. He died in 1176 under somewhat mysterious circumstances - perfect fodder for The Morrígan's curse. This song imagines his victories as hollow, his fate already sealed by the goddess of war from the moment he arrived.
The Morrígan Saga - Album Progress: This is Part 2 of the ongoing Neural Grooves mythology saga.
