The Legend of Cailleach:
In Celtic mythology, Cailleach is the divine hag, the ancient goddess of winter who predates Christianity. She rules from Samhain (November 1) to Beltane (May 1), bringing cold, storms, and the death of green things.
With her staff of blackthorn wood, she strikes the ground to freeze the earth. Where she walks, the land sleeps. She shapes mountains, moves stones, controls weather, and creates the winter landscape itself. Blue-skinned with white hair like frost, she is winter personified - not cruel, but necessary.
Some tales say she transforms into the spring goddess Brigid when winter ends. Others say she turns to stone, sleeping through summer only to wake again beneath the standing stones when autumn arrives. She is the cycle itself - death enabling rebirth, winter enabling spring.
Cailleach teaches that winter is not punishment but the oldest law - the wheel that must turn before new life can burn.
