The story behind this song
He's got honey on his tongue and fire in his eyes, and he's selling sweet salvation underneath these humid skies.
A tent on a hill. A congregation swaying to a rhythm dark and old. A man who can pull the guilt right out of you and make you testify your shame, then take your last hard dollar, whispering your name.
This is the only track on the album told from the pews. One voice in the crowd who sees exactly what's happening. He watches a woman weep and fall. He watches the preacher claim a victory. And when the hands come down on her, he sees no healing light.
After this song, that voice is gone. The rest of the album belongs to the preacher.
What to Expect. Frenzied slide guitar building to a chaotic, unhinged climax Charismatic and menacing gravelly vocals with a hypnotic call-and-response hook Syncopated hand claps and cicadas: a revival that sounds like a summoning The fastest, most volatile track on the album
INTRODUCING: THE SACRED FIRE
This is the first track of a brand new 12-track concept album. The Sacred Fire follows a travelling revival preacher across one final night. Eleven of the twelve tracks are inside his head. He isn't a con man who knows he's lying. He genuinely believes every word.
That's what makes him dangerous.
This is Track 1. The last time anyone sees him clearly.
