The history behind this song

The transformation begins. Donning the iconic beaked mask for the first time, a physician becomes something else—neither healer nor harbinger, but both. Stuffed with herbs and myrrh, the leather beak keeps contagion at bay, but it also erases identity. Behind glass eyes and a wide-brimmed hat, the person disappears. What emerges is the crow, the symbol of death walking plague-filled streets. This is the first entry in the journal, the moment when duty demands the ultimate sacrifice: becoming the thing all men fear.

What to Expect. Dark symphonic metal with medieval baroque fusion Haunting harpsichord and church organ creating Gothic atmosphere Powerful operatic female vocals delivering theatrical narrative Full orchestral arrangement with medieval strings and timpani Historical plague doctor lore brought to life in metal

The Story. In 1665, during the height of plague, a physician accepts the mantle of plague doctor. The costume is unmistakable: a long leather coat, wide-brimmed hat, and the infamous beaked mask filled with protective herbs. But the mask does more than guard against disease—it transforms the wearer into a walking symbol of death. Children flee, mothers pray the crow passes their door. The person behind the mask begins to fade, replaced by the role itself. Someone must attend the dying. Someone must walk where others dare not go. And so the doctor accepts this dark and cursed mission, knowing that with each step, the mask becomes more real than the face beneath.

"The Mask" opens our plague doctor saga at the moment of transformation—when a healer must become the embodiment of death to serve the dying. The iconic beaked mask is one of history's most haunting images, and this song explores what it meant to wear it, to feel your identity dissolve behind leather and glass, to become a walking symbol of plague itself. We've blended medieval baroque instruments (harpsichord, church organ, viola da gamba) with modern symphonic metal to create a sound that feels both historically grounded and theatrically powerful. The operatic vocals carry the weight of the journal entry—intimate confession mixed with Gothic grandeur.

Each song is a journal entry chronicling the doctor's descent from healer to something far darker. The crow has arrived.
