The myth, as it's usually told

Persephone

Hades took Persephone down into the underworld to be his queen. Her mother Demeter, goddess of the harvest, searched the earth in grief and let the crops die until Zeus ordered Persephone returned. But Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds below, and anyone who eats the food of the dead must return, so she spends part of every year underground. Her absence is winter.
