The story behind this song
He knew exactly what she was going to ask. He'd been answering these questions since before her kind found language for a word like yesterday.
She found him behind the last tent on the row. Counting something in the dark. She had questions. He had answers that were worse than no answers at all.
This is the track where the carnival stops being a place and starts being a mechanism. The man behind the tent doesn't want anything from her. Wanting implies need. The carnival just fits the cracks in people — and she came here with a crack.
The Story So Far: She turned off the highway. She heard the barker. She walked the midway, understood what the exhibits were really showing her, saw the scale of it from the top of the wheel. Now she's found the man counting something in the shadows behind the last tent. He's been expecting her specifically. He's been expecting everyone specifically.
This is Track 7. The answers are worse than the questions.
What do you think he was counting in the dark?
