The myth, as it's usually told
Echo was a mountain nymph whose endless talk kept Hera distracted while Zeus chased other women. When Hera realized, she cursed Echo to speak only the last words someone else had said. Echo fell in love with Narcissus, who rejected her, and she wasted away in grief until nothing was left of her but her voice.
