The legend, as it's usually told
Bu Darya, the Father of the Seas, haunted the pearling grounds of the Gulf. He imitated the cry of a drowning man so that divers went over the side after a friend who was not there, and boarded boats at night to take whichever sailor woke and saw him. A man who survived him was bad luck, so he could never tell anyone what he saw.
What the song hears
Not the monster's song. The song of the man who did not jump, and can never say why.
