The myth, as it's usually told
In Ovid's telling, Medusa was a beautiful young woman assaulted by Poseidon inside Athena's temple. Athena punished Medusa, not Poseidon, turning her hair to snakes and cursing her so that anyone who met her eyes turned to stone. The hero Perseus later cut off her head while looking only at her reflection in his shield.
What the song hears
She takes back her own reflection, and refuses to give anyone the redemption scene.
