The myth, as it's usually told
Hermes was born at dawn, invented the lyre by noon, and stole Apollo's cattle by nightfall. He became the messenger of the gods, protector of travelers, merchants and thieves, and the guide who walks the souls of the dead down to the underworld. He belongs to no single realm; he moves between all of them.
